So, this week has been chock full of nostalgia, as well as a few new experiences…

First the old

Old activities:

I live about five minutes away from where I went to high school. Over this last week I’ve realized I can hear the marching band practicing from my house, something I never noticed when I was in school (because I was one of those band geeks spending their summers marching on a black top rather than being home to hear them)

Wasn't I a cute band geek?

Just listening to them brings back memories of music circles, band camps, competitions and foot ball games. My band was pretty intense; our first summer practice was the week after school let out and we met once a week until band camp. Then we practiced every week day (all day) for the couple weeks before school started. Throughout the fall our schedule went: Tues. & Wed: after school-5, Thurs. 6:30-8:30, Fri. Meet for practice before the football game (time depended on home or away game) until the game was over, Sat. practice: ~noon until leaving for the nights competition arrive home in the wee hours of the morning. Then of course there was the odd parade or event we had to attend, basically for the season band was our lives, and for the most part I loved it.

I transferred from a tiny hippie school with 5 people in my graduating class (and yes we all graduated) to a high school freshmen class of 600+ students. I really couldn’t play the flute worth bragging about, but I’m a total introvert and band helped me meet people (my “high school sweet heart” was a saxophone player) It may have eaten up all of my time, but it was time I got to spend with my friends. Plus some of our shows weren’t all that bad, my freshmen year we did STYX (we had the best of times ;-P)

I really don’t know where I’m going with this but if you were part of any large group in school you probably know how I feel looking back at my time in band. I didn’t always love it, but I do love that I was part of it.

Old friends:

I finally got to catch with my friend who was supposed to go to the beach with me. We’ve been spending a lot of time talking, going to the gym, driving around the town (do not get me started on her driving skills, sometimes I’m surprised we’re both still alive), shopping and eating:

Sweet Potato Fries, from Iron Hill Brewery, downtown Lancaster.

Now onto the new

New try: crackle nail polish…

This stuff is cool, mostly for analyzing the chemicals in it to try to see how it works… (I am a NERD, and PROUD)

Sally Hansen “fractured foil” over a deep purple polish I’ve had for awhile (for when I feel like a little more color than my normal black)

Basically these polishes work because of an extra ingredient in the mixture: an ethanol, or specifically in this brand ethyl acetate (what nail polish remover is made of). This alcohol causes the polish to dry very quickly and unevenly (the opposite of what we normally want nail polish to do) resulting in the cool shattered look. I really want to buy some black shatter to wear over white or sliver polish…but maybe I could try making some with one of my numerous bottle of black polish…

New friends:

All ready for my date (please excuse the horribly corny poorly cropped mirror pic)

I had a date today. First date with someone new, always nerve wracking and something I’ve never been good at (and something I haven’t tried for awhile). Again I’m an introvert, talking to people doesn’t come all too naturally to me, I am not a people person. I think it went well, or at least I enjoyed it. It’s just a shame he’s not from NY being that I’m gonna be back there starting next week…

New harvest:

an assortment of tomatoes from our garden

New Life:

Look at this adorable baby I caught a glimpse of in my yard today

New Season?

No! I refuse! The leaves are so not allowed to start changing yet!

~What are your weekend plans?

~Do you ever get nostalgic over an activity like I do with band?

Have a great weekend everyone!
